CSAC Suggestions for LBNL Home Web Page

- We need to go through the draft one more time before

we sent it out to make sure we don't miss anything.

General layout:

Brief description of the events that triggered this memo.

It should show our concerns about the LBNL Web page and at the same time give real suggestions on how to change it (hopefully more effective than just saying, "we don't like it").

While writing this memo I had the page opened just in front of me so that I would see better how to change it and what to propose.

By organizing the various points from the top down it can help the recipient of this memo to have a clearer picture of this issue.

Paragraph 1.

- Describes the purpose of this memo and explicitly proposes CSAC to act as advisory to PID on the contents of the page.

Paragraph 2.

Analyzes the part with the changing images and proposes to go beyond the research review magazine article by adding related links.

It's probably appropriate to mention the problem with the LBNL reports online.

- Giving some feedback on our appreciation for the ongoing work on the LAB-wide search engine it's probably a good idea.

Paragraph 3.

- To add a clear statement about the lab scientific mission up front. This should be considered I think with no objections.

- I added that it would help from the point of view of the PR with the local community (the random person you talk to in Berkeley thinks that we are building weapons)

Paragraph 4.

Here is the main point (or at least the one that we discussed more extensively). It is quite detailed and I hope it will show clearly our main concern.

The proposal for a minimal change to quickly solve the main problem of the misleading first impression

The idea of improving the page by highlighting the "Scientific Programs" link

One example of unbalanced (also misleading) representation of the Lab activities.

Paragraph 5.

- Here is the actual suggestion on how to emphasize the Lab’s Scientific Program.

- I looked at the Organization chart of the lab and the best idea I could come up with was to list the three main scientific areas in addition to Computing Sciences.

- I also suggest that "National User Facilities should be listed separately.

Paragraph 6.

This should be the easiest point since I don't think we propose anything delicate here.

Concluding paragraph

It’s clearly necessary to emphasize again the nature of our intentions and motivations.
