New One-Stop Web Shop for Various Computer Accounts

The Computing Infrastructure Support Department, as part of its ongoing effort to make things easier for computer-using employees, has created a new site where employees can register for different accounts, including IMAP4 email, an electronic post office account (for receiving and sending email), Netscape Calendar, UNIX and the Novell servers. You can connect to the page by clicking on the New Employees icon on the main CIS help page (http://www.lbl.gov/help/) or by going directly to: http://www.lbl.gov/ICSD/CIS/accounts.html
New accounts will usually be created within 24 hours of the request.

Lab Increases Resources for Dealing with Y2K Issues

The Laboratory is serious about addressing any computer-related problems stemming from the onset of the year 2000. Called Y2K, these potential problems are due to the fact that older computers allocated only two numbers for the year in date-sensitive applications. A date field that contains "960121" refers to Jan. 21, 1996. But what is "000121"? Is it Jan. 21, 1900 or Jan. 21, 2000? When the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, 2000, many of the world's computers will reset their internal clocks to 1900. Others may reset to either 1980 or 1983. Regardless of the date, the associated problems will be significant.

Windows NT Users Should Take Care Not to Capture Printers

If you're one of the growing number of Lab users of Windows NT, be aware that the "capture printer" function is quite different from that of Windows. If you use NT to "capture printer," you essentially block all other people from using the same printer. Instead, you should connect to a printer by using the Add Printer Wizard. To add a printer, you'll need to know your Apple Talk zone (if you don't know this, the Help Desk can help you -- call X4357.)

New Website For Lab Computer Training Classes

Through AIM (Application Integration Methods), an outside vendor, the Lab offers employees a wide range of on-site computer training classes for employees. Now, not only is it easy to get training, it's easy to register.

Computer security is quite a hot topic in today's world. It seems a new computer virus spreads almost every day. Web sites are hacked and their content maliciously manipulated. Passwords are stolen as they pass over "the net." Privacy and security concerns pervade electronic commerce discussions.
